Visit the Arthur Guinness Graveyard - Only 8.2kms away

Uncle Arthur is buried at Oughterard graveyard near Ardclough, a 8.2km distance from us. The tiny cemetery of Oughterard is located on a small hill surrounded by beautiful countryside.

The site dates back to the 6th century and contains a 10th-century round tower, a 14th-century church, and a 17th-century castle. It also contains the grave of one of Arthur Guinness and has become a Mecca for discerning tourists. It is believed that Arthur’s grandfather, William Read, a farmer by trade set up a roadside stand near here to sell his homebrew to soldiers during the Jacobite wars of 1690. From such inauspicious beginnings, a legend was born.
