The legend of Tír na nÓg, the Land of Eternal Youth, is one of Ireland’s most ancient tales.🍀 Long ago in Éire lived the great warrior Oisín, son of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna. One day while the Fianna were hunting near Lough Leane in County Kerry, a beautiful woman named Niamh of the Golden Hair appeared riding a white horse. She told them she had come from Tír na nÓg and wished for Oisín to return there with her. Oisín fell in love with Niamh and rode away with her to the magical land. In Tír na nÓg there was no ageing, and Oisín lived happily there for what seemed like only a few years. But after three hundred years, he longed to see Ireland again. Niamh warned him that if he touched the soil of Ireland, he would never return to Tír na nÓg. When Oisín arrived home, he discovered that centuries had passed. His father and the Fianna were gone and the land had changed. As he leaned down from his horse to help men lift a stone, he fell to the ground. Instantly the magic left him and he aged into a very old man. The men brought Oisín to St. Patrick, where he told stories of the Fianna, Niamh, and the Land of Eternal Youth. THROWBACK THURSDAY! THE BUILD. Looking back on our build, which began in 2023... Johnny had dreamt up the idea of renovating 230 year old stone barns into holiday accommodation way back in 2018. Luckily, there was no interest from the council in preserving the old buildings when we enquired 10 years ago. After three companies calling out to investigate the walls and foundations, with the hope of us underpinning the front walls, we were told there was no way to keep them. It was a sad day when they came down after many years of withstanding everything that nature threw at them. We separated the stone, granite quoins, bricks and tiles. All these were reused in the build. Unfortunately most of the Blue Bangor roof tiles were unusable, but we have one full roof of them and it's lovely to see the old versus new tiles. I prefer the old! Some of the granite, stone and bricks still has moss on it. Preserving these materials was top priority for us and it was worth the effort. If anything, having a modern, new build means we have superb a BER rating, the buildings are warm and airtight, and we know we won't be in for any surprises in the future. #buildingpreservation #oldbuildings #ireland #cottagereno #buildingrenovations #selfcatering
